Smoke curled up from the shattered carcass of the helicopter, its broken rotor half-buried in the marsh. Mason’s ears rang with the echo of impact, the world around him blurred and humming like a wasp’s nest. Beside him, the pilot struggled to move, blood streaming from a gash above his brow. He whispered for help—then was silenced by two Viet Cong soldiers approaching the wreck.

Mason acted on instinct. His M1911 barked twice, and the enemies dropped. But the chopper groaned beneath him, metal shrieking as it began to sink. He clawed at the escape hatch—locked. Cold water surged into the cockpit. Then a hand appeared from above, wrenching the door open.

Reznov.

Not possible. Not here. But there he was, dragging Mason into the river’s choking current.

Hallucinations or not, Mason surfaced near a drifting sampan. Climbing aboard, he took a soldier hostage and gunned down the rest with a scavenged AK-47. Blood painted the boat’s floor. His vision blurred. The numbers… always the numbers.

At the riverbank, Woods appeared, offering a nod, and together they disappeared into the jungle. Mason kept his knife close, his pistol loaded. They moved like ghosts, slipping past sentries, eliminating them one by one—throats slit in silence, bodies slipping into the dark water.

Reznov’s voice echoed in Mason’s mind: “Dragovich. Kravchenko. Steiner.”

They regrouped with Bowman and another SOG operative near a derelict village built over a swamp. Mason planted C4 under a rickety walkway and moved on, stabbing an enemy guard through the chest with quiet precision. The hut above was still. Sleeping soldiers met death before waking.

When the charges blew, the village erupted in flames. Confusion swept the enemy. Mason, now armed with a Commando rifle and WA2000, led the assault. Viet Cong flooded the area, but they fell under withering fire. A ZPU-4 roared to life—Mason snatched up a Grim Reaper launcher and turned it into molten steel.

In the aftermath, they found the infamous rat holes—narrow tunnels disappearing into the black. Mason lobbed grenades into each. Then came the turret—a nest of fire and fury. Mason neutralized it with another rocket, the thunder of the explosion shaking loose the dead leaves above.

He and Swift were ordered down into one of the tunnels. Woods handed him a flashlight and a Python revolver. The air was thick with damp rot and death. Suddenly, Reznov appeared again, pointing deeper into the earth. “Kravchenko is near,” he said.

Swift didn’t see him. “What the fuck’s wrong with you?” he snapped at Mason, eyes wide with confusion and fear.

Then, silence broke. A flash of movement—a knife caught Swift in the gut. He crumpled, blood soaking the soil. Mason put the attacker down with a single shot, rage and panic boiling inside him. He pressed on alone.

The rat’s nest was a maze of horrors. Booby traps. Ambushes. Narrow escapes. Finally, he found Reznov again, standing by a crude lab. A tape crackled to life, Kravchenko’s voice droning about Nova 6—its power, its silence, the seconds before death.

Then came the detonation warning.

Mason and Reznov dashed through collapsing tunnels, the ground shuddering. Rocks fell. Mason clawed his way through rubble, lungs burning, adrenaline surging. When he emerged into daylight, there was no sign of Woods or Bowman. Only a cliff, a gorge below, and enemy fire from across the ravine.

Reznov returned to the fray, his M1911 barking defiance as he laid down cover fire alone.

Rotor blades thundered above.

A 1st Cavalry chopper ripped through the smoke, miniguns roaring as Woods and Bowman opened fire on the enemy lines. Mason ran, heart pounding, and leapt—air rushing past him—before crashing safely into the side door of the chopper.

As they lifted off, flames spread through the jungle below. Behind them, the shattered remains of the rat’s nest burned away with its secrets.

Ahead, Laos awaited.
